Light up the Sky: Breaking through the Darkness

The Scripture

"1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.  3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

John 1.1-4

One ordinary morning as I set out on my daily commute to work, I looked up and saw one of the most incredible skyscapes that I’ve ever encountered in my life. Although the sky was mostly overcast by a particularly large cloud, the edges radiated with beams of light bursting through the darkness. While I didn’t have a camera on hand, the following image is essentially identical to the sight that I had witnessed:

John begins by reminding us that it is because of God’s incredible power that all things were created. Consider the photograph above. While the expansiveness of the cloud cover appears to be overwhelming, the light is able to pierce through seemingly untouched. When we put our faith in the light of Christ, He can give us the strength to overcome even the most insurmountable of challenges.

The Music

Light Up the Sky illustrates how we can call upon God to guides us through the difficult times we face in life. When we don’t feel, can’t see, and have so far to go, God is ready to let His love come rushing in!

CONSIDER THE REPETITIOUS MOVEMENT OF THE CHORUS:

Light, light, light up the sky;
You light up the sky to show me You are with me;
And I, I, I can’t deny;
No I can’t deny that you are right here with me

The Challenge

How often do we take the light of day for granted? Maybe things have been going well lately and you haven't fully appreciated the light God has graciously given you. Or maybe there is someone you know who is in a very dark situation and is in desperate need of a glimpse of light. Perhaps that person is you. Sometimes God allows us to experience dark or “overcast” circumstances for us to recognize that the ultimate power is found in Him. Listen to the song “Light Up the Sky” and ask God to show you that, in all circumstances, He is with us and that through Him we can overcome anything.
